My NDIS Pathway: The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) have just released a new guide to being an NDIS participant My NDIS Pathway.

The NDIS is a new way of providing disability support, and the My NDIS Pathway booklet talks about the importance of understanding how the NDIS works.  First you need to determine if you, or the person you care for, is eligible to participate.  The booklet then talks about how you will develop a plan with the NDIS to help the person with disability access the supports they need.  Once enacted, the plan is then reviewed over time to ensure that the right supports are provided for as long as they are needed.

Lifelong Pathways can help you to prepare for the meeting where you, or the person you care for, develop a plan.  It is never too early to start preparing, and this is one of the reasons that the NDIS has released the My NDIS Pathway booklet.

The sections of the My NDIS Pathway booklet talk about how to the person with disability to:

  • Access mainstream services and supports
    • These are services that are available for all Australians, such as education.
  • Access community services and supports
    • These are activities and services available to everyone in the community, such as libraries and sports clubs.
  • Maintain your informal support arrangements
    • This is the help that you already receive from family and friends. The NDIS wants people with disability to continue to access their informal supports.
  • Receive reasonable and necessary funded supports
    • The NDIS can pay for supports that are reasonable and necessary for the person with disability. There are many factors that the NDIA has to considered before a support is considered as reasonable and necessary. For more information, please refer to the following document:

The NDIS supports people with disability to build skills and capacity so that they can participate in the community and gain employment.  The My NDIS Pathway booklet describes how the NDIS can assist people with disability to start preparing for their plan.  The booklet helps people with disability become familiar with the language that the NDIS uses.  Lifelong Pathways can assist you with all of the steps outlined in the My NDIS Pathway booklet – and much more.
